"IAS students develop their writing and communication abilities by advancing an awareness of the interconnected relationships between purpose, audience, author and context. They learn to communicate their purposes effectively to diverse audiences through writing, presentations, and other media, and to use a range of evidence, both qualitative and quantitative, to develop ideas and support claims in ways that best serve their needs. As part of this process, they develop the ability to indicate clearly and self-reflexively the ways their specific acts of communication relate to the work of others."
- University of Washington, School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences This is a skill at which I excel. I have always had a talent for writing and I chose to minor in Creative Writing alongside my major because of it. The first artifact I chose is my final project from Creative Writing: Prose. We had to write a 7,500-word chapbook. Over the course of the quarter I focused on developing my skills in creative non-fiction writing, as I have had plenty of fictional training. I wrote this work about my cats and lessons they have taught me throughout me life to this point. I had a lot of fun writing it and I hope everyone who reads it has a good time too. The second work is deeply personal, but I felt it was appropriate to include in this collection. It is my final chapbook from Creative Writing: Poetry and it contains 13 poems written and workshopped over the course of the quarter. I was going through a very difficult period personally, and I used the writing exercises in this class to help me work through some of my personal feelings. I can’t say I had fun writing them, but I learned a lot about myself and how to express myself to others in a new way. The last artifact is from my Intro to Creative Writing class. In this class we were taught the basics of writing fiction and were given instruction on traditional formal poetry. This is my final portfolio from the class, which included a fictional work, several poems, and a multi-genre piece I wrote about a scene from Game of Thrones. When looking back at this work I can see just how much I've improved. |
